Nestled unexpectedly in a gas station at 348a College Park Rd in Ladson, South Carolina, Cócteles El Primo is a hidden gem that redefines authentic Mexican dining. Despite its unassuming location and early closing time, this restaurant offers an extraordinary culinary experience that transports you straight to the vibrant streets of Mexico.

The menu is a celebration of rich, bold flavors, with standout dishes that have garnered enthusiastic praise from locals and visitors alike. Begin your feast with the Torre De Mariscos, a towering seafood cocktail bursting with a symphony of fresh shrimp, crab, and tender octopus, perfectly balanced with a tangy, spicy kick. For meat lovers, the Carne Asada and Fajitas de Pollo offer succulent, marinated cuts grilled to perfection, tender and juicy with every bite. The Pastor Taco is a must-try—each soft tortilla wrapped around smoky, savory pork topped with fresh cilantro and pineapple, enhanced by a delectably vibrant green salsa that adds just the right amount of heat.

Seafood aficionados will revel in dishes like Mojarra Empapelada—crispy on the outside and meltingly succulent inside—and Camaron a la Diabla, shrimp bathed in a fiery, smoky sauce that awakens the palate. Don’t miss the Chicken Empanadas, where flaky pastry encases seasoned chicken, offering a comforting yet exciting flavor profile. If you’re craving comfort food with a twist, the Torta de Milanesa delivers a satisfying crunch and hearty flavor that lingers delightfully.

The dining atmosphere at Cócteles El Primo is warm and inviting, a space that balances casual charm with attentive, friendly service. The authenticity is not just in the recipes but in the welcoming energy that flows from the kitchen to the tables. Many patrons, initially skeptical of the setting, find themselves pleasantly surprised and eager to return. Vibrant live music occasionally fills the space, enhancing the cultural experience and complementing the already rich culinary feast.

At first glance, you might think, "Really? A restaurant in a gas station? And it closes at 8:40 PM?" But trust me, once you get over the initial skepticism and step inside, you're in for a treat. The food is exceptional—Michelin star quality—and the service is super friendly. I couldn't have imagined finding food this good in a place like this. Highly recommend giving it a try!

The food is awesome! I made a blind guess for first time here. I got the stuffed crab with shrimp. We ordered to go. Then they bring me with a big party tray. And there are 2 whole crabs stuffed with tasty cheese and shrimps. The rice soaked in the sauce is so good! Yummy! I followed my intuition this is an authentic place, and it is right!

Ordered chicken empanadas to go. They were delicious. Seriously they were ridiculous. Good texture, right amount of filling to dough ratio, the chicken was seasoned good and they’re 4 for $13. Definitely worth it. The wait wasn’t too bad, just lets you know it’s fresh. The staff is very friendly and bilingual so don’t be intimidated because it’s not worth missing out on this place.
